Private Michael Williams, of the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment murdered 12 year old Majella O'Hare. Williams claimed that he had returned fire in self defence on an IRA unit, but this was rejected by witnesses who said that there were no other shots heard.
After a public outcry Williams was eventually charged with manslaughter. Lord Justice Maurice Gibson, sitting alone without a jury, in his typical biased fashion accepted there probably had been a gunman who fired simultaneously even though there was no independent evidence of anyone hearing other shots. Lord Gibson, acquitted Williams of manslaughter.
It was because of Gibsons consistent pro-British Army bias in such cases that he was later targeted by the IRA who killed him in 1987 with a roadside bomb.
