Pat Finucane

Share |
Pat Finucane, a human rights lawyer from Belfast who was murdered in front of his wife and children on 12 February 1989 by members of the UDA. One of those involved in his murder was Brian Nelson who was a British Army Force Research Unit undercover agent.

Patrick Finucane murder was planned by the Force Research Unit after a British Minister had said in Parliament that there were "a number of solicitors" in the north of Ireland who were "unduly sympathetic" to the cause of the IRA. This statement was interpreted as a green light by the FRU to order the killing of civil rights lawyers who had successfully challenged the British Government over several important human rights cases.

The names and circumstances of the death of the victims referred to on this website comes from court documents, witness statements, official reports, and respected human rights and civil liberties organisations such as Amnesty International. Allegations of the British Army Force Research Unit collusion in the murder of UK citizens, including the murder of human rights lawyer Patrick Finucane comes from the British Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens who conducted the official enquiry into British Army Collusion.
